The product

Gardyn is a plug-and-play vertical hydroponic system. Its closed-loop Hybriponics technology recirculates water using about 95% less than field farming; pre-seeded yCubes snap into the tower and an AI assistant called Kelby uses a camera plus sensors to automate watering and lighting and tell users when to harvest. One unit reportedly yields as much as a 1,300-square-foot outdoor garden.

How they did it

FX Rouxel, a former Capgemini executive, founded Gardyn in Bethesda, Maryland in 2018, frustrated by how much nutrition fresh produce loses in transit. He assembled a small team, raised roughly $5M in seed funding and shipped in March 2020. JAB Ventures led a $15M Series A in 2021 and a $35M Series B in 2022, taking total funding to $55M. A membership for plant refills and Kelby AI support created recurring revenue, and Gardyn passed 100,000 systems sold with 3.5 million pounds of produce grown by users.

Why it worked

  • AI assistance removed the skill barrier to hydroponics
  • Membership refills created predictable recurring revenue
  • Dense yield per square foot fit apartment living
  • A major consumer-goods investor funded scale-up and retail
